Fundación Mexicana para la Planeación Familiar, A.C. (MEXFAM)

Mexfam provides high-quality sexual and reproductive health services throughout Mexico. These services include gynecological care, contraceptives, pre- and post-natal care, abortion services, HPV vaccination, and HIV and STI prevention, testing, and treatment. Mexfam has programs designed specifically to reach indigenous people, rural and migrant populations, LGBT people, and young people living on the streets. It has mobile health services that reach people who live in the most impoverished states and sends community health workers to provide services at least once a month.

Mexfam’s youth program, Gente Joven, aims to reduce unplanned pregnancies, STIs, and HIV among young people in Mexico and increase access to comprehensive sexuality education and youth-friendly services. It has two clinics designed to serve youth specifically. Mexfam incorporates youth leadership throughout the organization, as health promoters, staff, and members of its Board. It believes young people’s active participation makes the process of developing, implementing, and monitoring the success of projects richer for everyone involved.

Mexfam is a part of IPPF/WHR's Mesoamerican Coalition and carries out national advocacy projects promoting comprehensive sexuality education and youth-friendly services. Its many areas of direct and indirect advocacy work include efforts to influence legislation and public policy, promote sexual and reproductive health issues with political candidates, and advocate for compliance with international agreements. Mexfam plays an important role in abortion-related advocacy and is well-integrated into the national pro-choice movement. It was selected to be part of the guiding committee for the National Federation of Sexual Education.
