Sociedad Civil Bem-Estar Familiar no Brasil (BEMFAM)
BEMFAM is dedicated to the promotion of social, sexual, and reproductive rights and the provision of health services for all Brazilians, particularly those who are poor and marginalized. It does this through lobbying political and religious leaders, and running extensive educational campaigns targeting the broader community. Its programs and strategies are designed specifically to reach vulnerable populations, such as indigenous people, people with disabilities, rural populations, sexually diverse populations, women experiencing gender-based violence, youth and women living or working on the streets, and sex workers. The services BEMFAM provides include gynecological care, contraceptive counseling, Pap smears, cancer screenings and treatment, and the prevention and treatment of STIs and HIV.
BEMFAM has seven youth centers targeting low-income communities in Brazil that conduct educational and empowerment projects focusing on the needs of young people. Each center has a group of youth promoters who are trained to educate other teenagers and engage in advocacy for youth sexual rights. The aim is to promote healthy practices that support marginal youth becoming aware of the importance of sexual and reproductive health.
