New York, NY—Giselle Carino, CEO and Regional Director of the International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR) issued the following statement regarding Dr. Natalia Kanem’s appointment to the United Nations Population Fund:
“We are thrilled that Dr. Natalia Kanem has been appointed as Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund. UNFPA’s mission—to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled—is the cornerstone of development. Dr. Kanem is a relentless advocate for women and girls and has dedicated her life to making the world a more just place. With over 25 years of experience in medicine, public health, social justice, and philanthropy, she will undoubtedly continue her pioneering work at the helm of UNFPA.”
The International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region works closely with the UNFPA at the global, regional and national levels. We are thrilled that, for the first time, a Latin American woman will serve in this vital position, and look forward to working closely with Dr. Kanem to ensure that the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women, men and young people are upheld and advanced.
