The controversy surrounding reproductive rights and sexual healthcare at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development may come as a surprise to the uninitiated. Isn't sustainable development about the environment? What has birth control and family planning got to do with it? The answer is: everything.
Sustainable development is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The track we are currently heading down, by ignoring reproductive rights, means that it is extremely unlikely any generation after us will be able to meet their basic requirements. We are condemning future generations to live in increasing levels of poverty.
