New York, NY—Giselle Carino, CEO of the International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR), issued the following statement regarding the Chilean Constitutional Tribunal’s 6-4 decision that lifting the total abortion ban in three circumstances is constitutional:
“Today is a historic day in Chile. We are so proud of the relentless activism of our Chilean partners and allies who fearlessly took on one of the most draconian bans on abortion in the world. Today the law, which was a relic of the Pinochet era, caught up with Chilean popular opinion and human rights standards—but the fight is far from over. While this is an important milestone for Chileans, we will continue to work with our partners to ensure that the law becomes a reality for women. We hope this victory sends a clear message to decision makers around the world that women are equal and deserve equal rights.”
Chile’s ban on abortion was absolute—even in cases of rape, when the woman’s life was at risk, and when the fetus was considered unviable. This afternoon, the Chilean Constitutional Tribunal ruled that the bill—which passed the Chilean Senate and a bicameral joint commission—is constitutional. It will now go to President Michelle Bachelet for signature.
IPPF/WHR worked closely with MILES Chile and APROFA—as well as a broader coalition of organizations dedicated to promoting human rights—on a multi-faceted advocacy strategy aimed at educating lawmakers, health care providers, public health workers, teachers and parents.
