Asociación Puertorriqueña Pro-bienestar de las Familias (Profamilias)
As one of the country's leading advocates, Profamilias has played a pivotal role in the promotion of sexual rights in Puerto Rico and across the region. It provides specialized programs and services for vulnerable youth, low-income people, and women experiencing gender-based violence. In 2015, ProFamilias provided 146,691 services. Almost half of these services were provided to individuals under age 25, reflecting the organization’s focus on adolescents and young adults. The total number of contraceptive services in 2015 was 88,536, or 60% of the total services that the network provided.
Profamilias leads comprehensive sexuality education sessions for young people and their parents in schools and the community. Its clinics offer youth-friendly services with fees on a sliding scale to ensure young people have access to care. Profamilias also operates a confidential telephone hotline to provide people with information about safer sex, contraception, HIV, and unintended pregnancies. Over half of its abortion services are to young people, as Profamilias is one of the only providers in Puerto Rico that does not require parental consent.
“Some of the key issues at play in sustainable development worldwide are increasing universal access to family planning and health services, promoting comprehensive sexuality education, fighting for girls' and women's rights, and economic equity,” said Youth Director Joan Soto. “To accomplish these goals we must empower young people and enable them to present their needs to decision-makers.”
In 2012, Profamilias prevented a revision to the Puerto Rican penal code that would have limited the right to abortion.
