Asociación Hondureña de Planificación de Familia (Ashonplafa)
Ashonplafa provides integrated sexual and reproductive health services from 31 clinics throughout Honduras. These services include pre- and post-natal care, contraceptives, abortion counseling, screening for gender-based violence, and HIV and STI testing and treatment. It offers subsidized services scaled to the client’s ability to pay, and operates nine mobile health units that reach people living in rural areas. In 2015, Ashonplafa provided 1.3 million services nationwide.
Adolescent pregnancies are common in Honduras, where one in four women 15-19 years old have been pregnant at least once. Ashonplafa considers its work with young people to be critical and offers youth-friendly services, comprehensive sexuality education, and a program that strengthens youth advocacy skills and provides peer education training.
In 2012, Ashonplafa was part of an advocacy initiative that led to a new national strategy to prevent adolescent pregnancy. It also influenced the Ministry of Education’s decision to mandate comprehensive sexuality education in schools. Ashonplafa also worked with the National Immunization Program on a pilot project that vaccinated more than 8,300 girls in La Paz and Comayagua against HPV.
