Men in the Movement: Carlos Pavel Smith
There is not soul in Panama's social justice movements that has not been touched by Carlos Pavel Smith. A dependable colleague and friend, Carlos was catapulted into the world of service when he was 14 years old and joined the country's Youth Leadership Movement Foundation. Now 28, Carlos is a respected advocate and mentor who has helped guide thousands of Panamanians toward a better future.
While studying Psychology at the University of Panama, Carlos began working with Aid for AIDS International. He was responsible for providing Panama's youth with invaluable comprehensive sexuality education and empowering them to take control of their sexual and reproductive health. After leaving the organization, he continued to emphasize adolescent health by joining the Comprehensive Sexuality Education Coalition, a network of local and international groups that fight for the sexual and reproductive rights of all Panamanians.
Carlos' passion and presence is woven into many different social movements in Panama. He works to provide vulnerable youth with complementary after-school programs that help them get a step ahead in life. He stands beside women's groups like Espacio de Encuentro de Mujeres, and advocates their right to live free from the threat of violence. Where ever injustice is found, Carlos' energetic spirit follows.
Carlos Pavel Smith has effected the lives of many. His untiring commitment to adding a male voice to the Panamanian feminist movement and visionary social change work continues to inspire countless youth and adults working toward a more just Panama.
