Experiences of a Youth Volunteer
The first time I heard about PLAFAM was three years ago. Who would have thought that I would end up connected to this organization through community service, and that my experience would go even further than that when I become a volunteer?
My PLAFAM journey has resulted in discoveries that have made me understand a bit more of the reality surrounding sexual and reproductive health, as well as the myths that exist in Venezuela. It has given me an increased appreciation for my own experiences and the importance of breaking the taboos surrounding sexuality in order to attack ignorance at its roots.
The months I have participated in PLAFAM’s activities have taken me down a road of self-discovery. It has allowed me to understand the importance of belonging to a social service organization. Volunteering makes me feel great, especially the feeling of giving to others without expecting anything in return. My time with PLAFAM has helped me discover that I want to keep exploring these issues and link them with my international studies career in the future.
My journey with PLAFAM has not only been personally gratifying, but also educational. It has increased my level of social awareness and self-awareness. I know that it is possible for me to do things for others, which is what makes life worthwhile. I will always be honored to put in my tiny grains of sand any chance I get because, as Reverend Peter Marshall once said, "a different world cannot be built by indifferent people."
