Choosing to Have a Child
Two years ago, Martha Alanoca and her husband were trying unsuccessfully to start a family. In Bolivia, where Martha lives, the prohibitively high cost of private sector fertility clinics prevents many couples who want to have children from getting the help they need to make this dream a reality. But for Martha, things were different: she was able to conceive after receiving treatment at the new fertility clinic run by our Member Association, CIES.
Recognizing that there was a need among its clients for affordable fertility services, CIES looked to our network of 41 Member Associations to learn from their experiences. Profamilia Colombia provided technical assistance to get the fertility clinic in Bolivia up and running. It helped CIES purchase equipment, develop a protocol for client care, and create a sustainable business plan.
The fertility clinic has been so successful that the revenue it generates is used to subsidize CIES’ mobile health services, which travel through Bolivia’s rural countryside to serve the country’s neediest people. It has also helped women like Martha fulfill their dreams of starting a family.
“I always wanted to be a mother,” said Martha. “Now, I have two beautiful boys.”
