A March of Passion and Concern – The High Level Meeting on AIDS! 9th June 2011
and LaToya Cadogan-Williams, BFPA
The assumption for those not deeply entrenched within the world of HIV and AIDS advocacy would be that governments across the world are investing heavily in global HIV/AIDS relief. Yesterday on the streets of New York that simple fallacy was dismissed and IPPF/WHR’s youth advocacy team was there to participate.
In the sweltering heat, we hit the pavement from Bryant Park to the UN headquarters where governments and civil society were gathered for the High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS. Advocates from across the world marched together, highlighting the lack of funding for AIDS, the demand for access to treatment and the recognition of sexual rights.
While the march was not large and grandiose in scale, the passion and determination of the advocates was palatable.
