Move for Your Sexual Rights

Joan Soto, Youth Director at Profamilia Puerto Rico

In celebration of International Planned Parenthood Federation's 60th anniversary, fifteen young people from Profamilia used contemporary dance moves to capture the attention of a group of teens at The Boys and Girls Club in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Profamilia's flash mob is created by and for youth and promotes sexual and reproductive health and rights.

When the performance ended, Profamilia's youth educators held a workshop to explain the importance of sexual rights. Sexuality educator Maria Pereira said that sexual and reproductive rights are a part of human rights because they promote well being, freedom, and equality. Ninotshka De Jesus, one of the workshop facilitators, cautioned the participants by saying, "Knowing your sexual rights does not exempt you from contracting a sexually transmitted disease. It is important to take steps to protect yourself."

Profamilia supports the right of young people to have access to the sexual and reproductive health information and youth-friendly services they want and need. It develops trainings for peer health educators and supports community outreach projects that promote youth sexual rights in Puerto Rico.
