What are Your Hopes for the Next Four Years?

The International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region congratulates President Barack Obama on his re-election as the 44th President of the United States of America.

Women’s health and human rights advocates, including our Member Association, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, have lauded the victory as a strong win for reproductive rights and health in the United States.

“The election sends a powerful and unmistakable message to members of Congress and state legislatures all around the country that the American people do not want politicians to meddle in our personal medical decisions,” Planned Parenthood Federation President Cecile Richards said in a statement.

With the re-election of President Obama, the United States also has the opportunity to ensure that U.S. foreign assistance prioritizes sexual and reproductive health programs, particularly for the poorest and most vulnerable in our region. Shortly after his election in 2008, President Obama affirmed his administration’s strong commitment to women’s health and rights by rescinding the Global Gag Rule—a policy which blocked millions of women worldwide from accessing lifesaving health information and services—and by restoring U.S. support for the United Nations Population Fund’s global reproductive health program.

"When you empower individuals and families with the information and services they need to decide on all aspects related to reproduction and sexuality, you create more sustainable and just communities." says Regional Director Carmen Barroso.

At a time when some global health donors and governments are urging greater investments in reproductive health, the Obama Administration has the opportunity to create policies and programs that meet the real-life needs of women and youth throughout our region, and the world.

Given this opportunity, what actions would you like to see the Obama Administration take to ensure access to sexual and reproductive health and uphold the human rights of all?
