Women Who Inspire Change: Ann Wambui

In 2007, I worked for six months as a volunteer in a slum in Ngong, Kenya. The organization I worked with, Living Positive, in is located in the Rift Valley. It seeks to improve the health and economic status of impoverished women who are living with HIV/AIDS.
One of the women in the program was a wonderful and smart lady named Ann Wambui. She had gone blind in one eye as a result of the disease. Ann initially joined the program because she was seeking support, but she soon became so actively involved that she became a community health worker as well.
Ann helped with everything from making and selling cards in the tourist market to taking other women to the hospital to receive medication. She lived alone, but was surrounded by many because she was always happy to help others. Ann was such an inspiration for me because she taught me that being HIV+ doesn't have to mean living in misery. Her life was an stunning example not just for the other HIV+ women in the program, it was also an example for me.
