Centro Ecuatoriano para la Promoción y Acción de la Mujer (CEPAM)
Based in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s most populous city, CEPAM’s focus is twofold: 1) promote sexual and reproductive health and rights, particularly for youth, and 2) prevent gender-based violence.
CEPAM carries out its mission though school- and community-based initiatives, led by peer educators who inform young people about their sexual and reproductive health and rights. It promotes youth-friendly approaches to service provision and trains healthcare professionals to adequately respond to young people’s sexual and reproductive health needs.
CEPAM operates a youth center called "Casitas" in one of Guayaquil’s poorest neighborhoods where the teen pregnancy rate is nearly 1 in 2. At Casitas, young people can receive counseling, health services, and contraceptives.
CEPAM has also developed innovative program models that successfully prevent gender-based violence, provide counseling and legal assistance to victims, and sensitize healthcare and legal professionals to the needs of survivors. It provides technical assistance to government clinics that are dedicated to the prevention of gender-based violence and the support of its victims.
