The Asociación Civil de Planificación Familiar (PLAFAM) is a pioneer in sexual and reproductive health in Venezuela and is recognized for its diverse, rights-based programs and advocacy work. PLAFAM provides services in several key programmatic areas including: abortion services, HIV/AIDS services, and STI services. During 2007, PLAFAM-Venezuela provided a total of 121,940 services.
In Venezuela, PLAFAM is a regional leader among IPPF Member Associations in its efforts to address unsafe abortion. PLAFAM took important steps in its efforts to guarantee high-quality, comprehensive care for women facing unwanted pregnancies by advancing the harm reduction model of care. PLAFAM offers clinical and laboratory tests for all of the major STIs and provides the ELISA and rapid test for HIV, with routine pre- and post-test counseling and services for all clients, regardless of their age, social status, sexual orientation, or reason for visit. PLAFAM also provides special attention to clients dealing with gender-based violence. Since 2006, PLAFAM has been working on a project to integrate sexual diversity into its policies, programs, organizational networks and services, with a special emphasis on youth and adolescents.
