16 Days: PROFAMILIA Colombia's International Day of No Violence Against Women

Last year, PROFAMILIA Colombia collected artwork from around the world for an International Day of No Violence Against Women. The collection was a part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence and raised awareness about the right of women to live without the threat of gender-based violence. It was also a tribute to the Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa), three political activists who demanded equal rights for women. The sisters were killed in the Dominican Republic on November 25, 1960 by secret police who were ordered by dictator Rafael Trujillo. For more than a year, eight young artists traveled throughout Colombia spreading the message that being free from gender-based violence is a human right.
