In this Fall 2010 edition of Reaching Out you will learn more about how IPPF/WHR tackles the complex problem of gender based violence and how IPPF/WHR scales up its efforts to ensure that all young people have access to sexual and reproductive health.  Also, Alex Sanger contributes an OpEd about the importance of investing in young people and we highlight the commitment of donor Gerald Pearsall.

Efforts to effectively address the health needs and outcomes of out-of-school youth with high exposure to the street remain limited. With generous support from the European Commission, the International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR) three-country initiative, “Improving the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights of Street Youth in Bolivia, Guatemala and Peru,” designed strategies to address these critical issues.

A resource kit to help educators around the world develop or adapt an existing curriculum to educate young people on their sexual and reproductive health. Through a gender equality and human rights based focus, youth are empowered to enjoy dignity, equality, and healthy, responsible and satisfying sexual lives.

In 2008, our 41 Member Associations in Latin America and the Caribbean provided 29, 819,125 services. We helped improve individual lives, change attitudes and reduce poverty’s grip throughout the region. We drove on rugged mountain roads to serve women living in remote villages, miles from the nearest clinic. We were in the forefront of opposition to restrictive laws repressive policies and that deprive women of their dignity and the right to determine their own reproductive destinies.  We also empowered young people through peer education programs and increased their access to appropriate sexual and reproductive health education, information and services.

The publication "Youth Sexuality: Confronting HIV/AIDS" centers around IPPF/WHR's strategies for engaging and working with youth and HIV.

The Spring edition includes articles on women's rights in Latin America,
particularly in Mexico and Nicaragua. IPPF/WHR's work in empowering
youth to change their lives in Bolivia is highlighted as well as the
op-ed, "The Global Gag Rule - Is the end near?"

With funding from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, IPPF/WHR, along with eight organizations in the region, embarked on a process of evaluating their youth programs with the hope of identifying "best practices" for working with youth.

This report evaluates the development of IPPF/WHR Member Association programs that use computer technologies to reach young people with sexual and reproductive health information.
