Location
The Fundación Mexicana para la Planeación Familiar (MEXFAM) provides high quality sexual and reproductive health services throughout the Mexico. It is recognized as a leading organization in promoting and disseminating Emergency Contraception (EC) in the country, and it continues to play a leading role in providing services to adolescents, primarily in urban areas as well as providing and advocating for abortion related services in certain areas. MEXFAM provides services and contraceptives through 1,202 service delivery points, which include: 18 static clinics, one associated clinic, 43 private physicians and 1,140 community-based distribution points. MEXFAM provided a total of 1,587,483 services throughout Mexico in 2007.
Working closely with other NGOs, MEXFAM advocated for the decriminalization of abortion up to the twelfth week of gestation in Mexico City and began facilitating trainings for community health educators on issues related to unwanted pregnancy. The association has youth specific clinics and spaces offering a full range of services to young people including abortion counseling, STI and HIV counseling and testing, gender based violence (GBV) services, and many other services. MEXFAM has many partnerships with both governmental and non-governmental organizations throughout the country, with sexual and reproductive health groups and coalitions as well as open and supportive alliances with the Ministry of Health, legislators, and municipal presidents.
