Asociación Pro-Bienestar de la Familia Colombiana (PROFAMILIA) is a private, non-profit organization that contributes to improving the sexual and reproductive health of women and men throughout Colombia. PROFAMILIA simultaneously works to develop social programs that reach the poorest, most vulnerable, and marginalized communities. PROFAMLIA is a major source of family planning and sexual and reproductive health services in Colombia, providing approximately 25% of the family planning services throughout the country. In 2007, PROFAMILIA provided 3,247,335 services. PROFAMILIA provides services and contraceptives through 1,667 service delivery points, which include: 34 static clinics, 33 mobile clinics, and 1,600 commercial marketing points. PROFAMILIA also provides services to displaced populations and communities in 22 departments and the Colombian capital, Bogotá. Through its marketing program, PROFAMILIA also distributes contraceptives and sexual and reproductive health products.
PROFAMILIA is a leader in its work with young people, offering youth-friendly, subsidized services in youth centers, in spaces specifically dedicated for youth, in clinics for adults, and through integrated services in adult clinics. Thirty-four of PROFAMILIA’s centers have programs for youth. Other highlights of PROFAMILIA’s work include the campaign, AVISE, for the Comprehensive Treatment of Sexual Violence. In addition, PROFAMILIA offers legal counseling, psychological assistance and referrals to other organizations to women who are victims of violence. The association designed tools and a mechanism for screening women for gender-based violence, as well as a protocol for the provision of services. PROFAMILIA is a recognized leader in sexual and reproductive health in Colombia and because of its high profile, is a frequent source of information for important mass-media outlets in the country.
