Highlights from the 2012 Regional Council Awards Banquet
Kelly Castagnaro, Director of Communications
Every 18 months, the International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR) holds the Regional Council, bringing together executive directors, board members and youth from our 40 member associations throughout Latin America and the Caribbean to share lessons learned, discuss emerging issues and share effective programs strategies to secure universal access to sexual and reproductive rights and health.
The Regional Council also includes an awards banquet to recognize Member Associations and leaders in our field. The banquet was held in San Jose on October 21.
Three Member Associations whose innovative approach has significantly benefited the work of IPPF were honored with the WestWind Awards:
- • BEMFAM, Brazil for its outstanding contribution to ensuring access to sexual and reproductive health and rights for all, especially vulnerable and poor populations.
- • APLAFA, Panama for its efforts to diversify its board of directors and strengthen its leadership.
- • CIES, Bolivia for its advocacy efforts to ensure sexual and reproductive rights.
The Outstanding Youth Award was awarded to Juan Camilo Saldarriaga in recognition of his ongoing advocacy at the United Nations and at the regional and national levels for the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people throughout the region.
Women’s Link Worldwide Executive Director and internationally renowned lawyer Monica Roa was awarded the Rosa Cisneros Medal of Honor for her leadership in securing the historic decision by the Constitutional Court of Colombia to end its ban on abortion.
And to close the ceremony IPPF/WHR Regional Director Dr. Carmen Barroso gave an emotional presentation to the winner of the prize for dedication to the cause, former IPPF/WHR Board Member Dr. Anibal Faúndes:
"It is difficult to boil down the enormous contributions of Dr. Aníbal Faúndes into a few lines…but I am particularly grateful for the immense dedication of this brave man; as a volunteer for BEMFAM and as a member of the Board of WHR, he has greatly contributed to advancing the cause within IPPF of ensuring that women have access to safe abortion services. It is only fitting that this year, as we celebrate 60 years of providing choice and opportunity to women worldwide, that we honor a man who has worked to strengthen our network, improve the human rights of women and ensure access to quality sexual and reproductive health services for all."
