Women that Deliver
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day, Women Deliver announced the “Women Deliver 100,” a list of the hundred most inspiring people who have delivered for girls and women. It is with great honor that Carmen Barroso, Regional Director of IPPF/WHR be recognized as one of the most committed individuals to improving the lives of girls and women around the world. Please find her comments below.
It makes me proud to be honored with other dedicated and results-driven people in the world.. It is not every day that I am listed side by side with Hilary Clinton and Michelle Bachelet! However, the 100 women who deliver are only the tip of the iceberg. There are thousands and thousands of women all over the world who are delivering for women; among them are the IPPF staff and volunteers. As a result of our collective efforts, we have provided reproductive healthcare to millions of women worldwide and IPPF has become one of the most powerful advocates for sexual and reproductive health and rights. IPPF is such a large and complex organization, that the immense work of making it vibrant and responding to the hugely diverse needs of girls and women can only be possible with the joint efforts of volunteers and staff too numerous to mention. Together we are women and men that deliver.
Now, I am also humbled by the recognition that there is much that still needs to be done. Young women, in particular, still have their needs mostly unmet. Most of them, especially the poorest, don’t have access to services and education that could enable them to choose what is best for themselves and their future. Their sexual rights and their reproductive rights are routinely ignored and most advocates have not paid enough attention to this area where violation of human rights are rampant. IPPF could do much more if enough resources were available.
