Top 16 Photographs of 2011 (Part Two)

As a network of 40 sexual and reproductive health organizations across North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean, IPPF/WHR staff travels to many countries throughout the year to help strengthen the capacity of our Member Associations, which provide family planning and related health services in accordance with the local needs, customs, and laws. This year some of the successes we witnessed include an HPV vaccination program in Bolivia, peer health educators teaching youth how to use contraceptives in Guatemala, and mobile health units reaching people who live in poverty and isolation in rural Peru. This two-part series features 16 of our staff's favorite photos from 2011.

9. To combat the alarmingly high rate of cervical cancer in Bolivia, CIES partnered with the government and a Gardasil access program to offer the HPV vaccine in schools, health centers, and mobile clinics. Their 14 clinics and mobile health units are able to reach remote communities throughout the country to ensure widespread access to this lifesaving preventative measure.

10. A poster in a PROFAMILIA clinic in Managua, Nicaragua advertises its confidential health services for young people who, lacking accurate information and knowledge about sexual and reproductive health, often feel completely isolated. The sign reads: "You are not alone. PROFAMILIA will give you a hand."

11. In Guatemala, APROFAM's youth health educators teach their peers about sexual and reproductive health, such as how to correctly use a female condom. Peer educators are often the most effective teachers, engaging youth in their own spaces and using their own language.

12. IPPF/WHR Regional Director Carmen Barrosso cuts the ribbon of PROFAMIL Haiti’s new clinic in Port-au-Prince. The facility is made of prefabricated structures that are more durable than the tents it used after the January 2010 earthquake.

13. Peru’s leading sexual and reproductive health organization, INPPARES, works with the poorest and most marginalized communities to provide comprehensive sexuality education and health services in a safe and confidential environment.

14. In Costa Rica ADC organized a Diversity Festival to celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia. Through service provision and advocacy, ADC works to ensure that sexual rights are recognized and respected.

15. In Port-au-Prince, Jacmel, and Port-de-Paix, PROFAMIL Haiti operates clinics that provide family planning, early detection of breast and cervical cancer, pre-and-post natal services, youth programs, and voluntary counseling and testing for HIV/AIDS.

16. IPPF/WHR staff supports our U.S. Member Association, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, at the “I Stand With Planned Parenthood” rally in New York City.
